Shiqi Li

Shiqi Li is a Chinese- born, emerging jewellery artist and designer. Her works have been exhibited at Munich Jewellery Week and Venice Design Week. Her ‘Home Adornments’ – as seen at Decorex 2019 are currently exhibiting at An+ Art and Design Centre in Shenzhen, China. Her works create a relationship between contemporary jewellery and domestic objects, experimenting with the possibility of transforming objects in the home into adornments for the body, and vice versa. Influenced by humble domestic items and home rituals, Li’s work aims to recreate the feelings of familiarity and memory of home in the form of worn jewellery.

Li’s Home Adornments explore the ever-present connection between two-dimensional forms and three-dimensional objects, and the transformation of one into the other through the processes of drawing and making. Abstracting motifs from plants and flora to create raised wallpaper inspires the form of each piece of jewellery. Cast and 3D printed pieces experiment with different processes of creating three-dimensional works from abstract two-dimensional forms.

Jewellery pieces, designed with the wallpaper, are created to be worn on the body, reminding the wearer of home. When no longer in use, the pieces are reunited with the wallpaper as three-dimensional home adornments, creating unique compositions and embellishing the interior space. Through their dual presence on the body and in the domestic space, Li’s works extend the preconceptions of jewellery’s decorative function. challenge perceptions of the home, enriching any space with creativity and aesthetic pleasure.

At Future Heritage

In 2019, Li made Damask inspired textured wallpapers in pink, gold and blue for Future Heritage, which covered a wall area and a pillar. She designed a magnetic system that allowed the plant-inspired earrings and brooches she made to be worn on the body and be displayed as home adornments on the wallpaper when not in use.

“I really appreciate that Future Heritage gave me a great opportunity to present my works to the public and helped to connect me with interior designers. It was very helpful to hear the feedback from the professionals which has motivated me to move forward.”Shiqi Li

Covid-19 has prevented Li from working in her studio, but she has been using this time to look for inspiration and plan a fresh collection. Her new collection will keep the function by allowing the user to take pieces inspired by the wallpaper motifs to wear as jewellery, but it will also have a new feature that allows any kinds of jewellery to be added to the wallpaper.
