Following an incredible response and the success of 2023, we’re thrilled to announce the return of Making Spaces to Decorex 2024! This year’s event features a fresh lineup of exceptional artisans who will be showcasing their skills.
In partnership with Fromental, Making Spaces will present a series of captivating installations, offering an exclusive insight into the intricate process behind Fromental’s silk wallpaper production.
Founders Tim Butcher and Lizzie Deshayes believe that a product's true beauty lies in the excellence of its craftsmanship. In fact, they are passionate about the role of beauty in enhancing our wellbeing — "we want to help you fling your arms wide and welcome it generously into your everyday life!"
As part of an exclusive extension to the space for 2024, Making Spaces will feature a host of returning makers from the past two years. Explore the returning makers taking part in 'The Next Chapter' instalment of Making Spaces.
We’re also introducing Making Spaces Workshops — a series of one-hour, hands-on sessions. From painting silk artwork with Fromental to creating embossed copper tiles with Bryony Knox, these workshops offer a unique chance to engage directly with our artisans.

Rycotewood Furniture Centre Oxford - Delivering excellence in design & Craft education since 1938. Set up in 1938 by the late artist and philanthropist Cecil Michaelis to provide craft training for young people. A keen supporter of the Arts and Crafts movement he was concerned that valuable skills were in danger of being lost.
Rycotewood still keeps these values at its core offer a wide variety of courses to the next generation of designers and makers. Students can join us straight from school undertaking level 2 City and Guilds qualifications in Furniture Making by hand with progression onto level 3. Focus of these courses is on traditional furniture making using hand tools. Constructing boxes and drawers using dovetails joints and door frames with mortise and tenon joints. Veneering is a key skill, and this allows our students to work creatively developing marquetry designs. This course also equips older students to develop and build on existing craft skills.
QEST supports and champions excellence in British craftsmanship by funding the training and education of talented and aspiring makers. Since 1990, the charity has awarded £5.3 million to some 700 makers working across the UK in a broad range of traditional and contemporary craft skills. In addition to financial support, QEST provides its alumni with business skills development through its partnership with Cockpit Studios as well as opportunities for exhibitions, collaborations and commissions through its networks and other partnerships.
In November 2022, QEST was delighted to announce a new partnership with the National Saturday Club as part of developing new programmes focussed on young people and diversity. Over the course of the next two years, at least 10 Craft&Making Clubs will be established across the UK to introduce 13-16 years old – many from disadvantaged backgrounds and under-represented communities - to personal and career development opportunities with a focus on craft, making, and creativity.
The Black Artisans showcases and celebrates established UK based Black Artisans through a travelling photography exhibition. A complete suite of filmed interviews featuring the artisans accompanies the exhibition, to be used for educational purposes.
As well as capturing traditional sectors of UK heritage crafts, The Black Artisans captures artisans in other areas of cultural heritage – steel pan makers, and calabash artists, for example. This body of work seeks to make visible Black Artisans and to enlighten, educate and inspire people and in particular young people to explore these areas as a potential field of work or as a leisure interest, perhaps not previously considered or made available.
This project is funded by Waltham Forest Council's Make It Happen Award and supported by the Heritage Crafts Association.
