Decorex X Ellen Merchant

We have collaborated with the talented Ellen Merchant, a designer and printmaker based in Rye, to design our 2024 creative.

Ellen Merchant is a British textile designer and decorative artist who specialises in creating original patterns for interiors. Decorex attendees have been lucky enough to see Ellen on our Making Spaces feature 2 years in a row.

About Ellen Merchant

After graduating and working as a print designer for fashion, it became clear to Ellen that she wanted to create textiles with real purpose and longevity. Ellen established her studio in 2021 with a mission to offer timeless, quality interior textiles – all designed and produced in England using traditional techniques.

Ellen Merchant Design Style

Drawing from a love of pattern and print, Ellen Merchant creates hand-drawn, uplifting interior textiles with a decorative aesthetic that pays homage to the British Arts and Crafts movement. At every step Ellen prioritises the integrity and character of hand processes, resulting in decorative design that is alive with the spirit of it's making.

Decorex and Ellen Merchant

Having been featured at Decorex 2022 and 2023 on the Making Spaces feature, it was clear that Ellen Merchant was a favourite among our attendees. Not only does the interiors community love Ellen’s approach to textiles, but her refreshing take on traditional techniques is what design is all about.

"I was thrilled to be asked to be the creative for Decorex 2024. I have loved being a part of the show for the past two years and can't wait to have my design featured across this year's branding. I designed this print especially for Decorex 2024, the fan shaped flower with radiating petals is inspired by the ancient greek ’anthemion’ motif, a nod to the venue’s namesake Olympia London."

The Creative

The branding for this year has been created using traditional techniques, resulting in a soft pattern of pinks, blues, greens, and oranges, evoking an oasis of design. The traditional craft skill, Printing, allows Ellen to use her hand-drawn creations and apply them to decorative designs, a way in which she pays homage to the British Arts and Crafts movement.

Ellen Merchant carefully curated these designs, allowing us to then tailor them further to suit the vision of this year’s event. The result is exquisite, highlighting the amazing craftsmanship behind these traditional techniques.

“Ellen Merchant has been involved in Decorex for the past two years and I’m thrilled that she has taken on the opportunity to design this year’s creative, delivering such beautiful results in gorgeous colourways. Ellen has been a delight to work with, the craftsmanship and creativity involved in developing this is central to Decorex’s ethos and I can’t wait to see this design come to life over the next few months across our marketing channels and at the show.”
