Cristina Vezzini & Stan Chen met and began working together in 2011, whilst on a Ceramic and Glass MA course at the Royal College of Art. They set up their studio immediately after graduating. Cristina Vezzini specialises in hand crafted ceramics and Stan Chen is an accomplished glassblower. Their creative partnership brings together their two disciplines, materials and styles within unified compositions.
Since founding their studio, Vezzini & Chen have shown their work internationally, exhibiting in the UK, Italy, Switzerland and Spain, as well as in New York, Dubai, and Seoul. They have been commissioned for public and private projects, including: private residences in New York, Amsterdam, Milan, Hong Kong and London, and public projects in Doha, Qatar and Japan for the Aston Martin showroom. Vezzini & Chen have also recently created a ceramic lighting collection for Heals 1810 (London).
The duo made entirely new works for Future Heritage. Inspired by the traditional neoclassical glass chandelier, with curl glass arms and irregular swirls, Vezzini & Chen created ‘Forest of Light,’ a forest of glass arms harmoniously joined with elements from their iconic ‘Geo’ pendant light. Hand blown glass spheres sat on curve glass arms, like buds sprouting from the branches of a tree. In each sphere a ceramic core, individually hand carved, housed the light.
In addition they created a development of their ‘Fragment vase,’ collection of 43cm tall porcelain vases, the largest yet produced by the duo. Inspired by rock formation, ‘Fragment’ is a collection of porcelain vases, whose surfaces are hand carved with different textures following the faceted forms of each vase. The different textured surfaces create an interplay between light and shadow typical of Vezzini & Chen’s work.
This vases were created using a slip casting technique, which at this scale was quite challenging but nevertheless very rewarding, to make.
“Future Heritage was a great opportunity to show our work to a high end interior design audience. It was a great opportunity to meet new clients, interior designers and galleries, many of whom we are still in contact with today.” - Cristina Vezzini & Stan Chen
Their most ambitious project to date is a 2.3 meter tall new floor light, shown with Adrian Sassoon gallery at PAD, London and Salon Art +Design in New York last November. It was purchased for an apartment in New York. The duo have also completed a 7m long ceramic chandelier for a hallway for a private client in London’ It required them to find the perfect ceramic grey tones to suit the client’s house wall colour and carpet. They also made a glass and ceramic wall installation for a new hotel in Okinawa, Japan, to welcome visitors to the Olympics.
Had Covid-19 not interfered, they would have been showing a new chandelier in Milan Design week with Rossana Orlandi, instead it was launched virtually via Instagram.
They also designed and created 2 commercial collections, ‘Ginkgo’ and ‘Diploria,’ ceramic pendant light collections for Heals 1810.
