Studio Glithero

Studio Glithero is the collaboration of Dutch designer, Sarah van Gameren and British designer, Tim Simpson. Their innate curiosity and attention to detail yields products that combine precision with inventiveness, and serendipity with design. What sets them apart is their attention to the performativity of materials, to the vitality of process, and to duration. The studio produces a diverse range of products, furniture, and time-based performances for institutions and individuals, with a conceptual rigour and inquisitiveness that is distinct. Glithero works across a spectrum of materials, from wax to plaster, light-sensitive chemicals, and quick-setting concrete, and with a wide range of processes; nothing is off limits.

With a focus on process-led design, Glithero often employs narrative techniques in film, to interrogate manufacture and reveal the alchemy of making; their aim is to capture the singular moment in which things are made. They believe that process is as important as the finished object; that it is the makers’ intention, the context for making, and the process of facture that matters most in the face of changing design tastes.

Van Gameren is a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands and Simpson studied Product & Furniture Design at Kingston University in the UK. Both completed their MA in Product Design at the Royal College of Art in London. Glithero’s work is represented in museum collections worldwide, including the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Zuiderzee Museum, Design Museum Museum Den Bosch, Gent Design Museum in Belgium, Manchester Metropolitan University Collection in the UK, Centre National des Arts Plastiques in France and Mudac in Lausanne Switzerland.

BOTANICAL RUGS BY STUDIO GLITHERO

At Future Heritage

Glithero presented a unique mural made of their earthenware ceramic tiles called ‘Botanical Tiles.’ These have a heavily decorative pattern of overlooked London weeds, carved into the glaze by a team of crafts people, who still use traditional Dutch ceramics techniques. They also presented a collection of light-printed porcelain ‘Silverware Vases,’ with prints made from seaweeds that they had harvested on the shores of the UK. In addition, they exhibited their new, hand knotted Botanical Rugs decorated with London weeds, made in collaboration with Le Manufacture Cogolin.

“Our ‘Botanical Tile’ murals are often conceived in a collaborative process together with interior designers and we enjoyed being able to discuss their wider vision at Future Heritage.” - Studio Glithero

Current work

Studio Ayaskan are currently working on a series of multisensory artworks under the name ‘Earth to Space’; an ongoing exploration into our relationship with nature and our surroundings. Inspired by “The Overview Effect”, ‘Earth to Space’ aims to abstract our connection to nature through a series of objects that heighten our sense of connectedness with nature. This is achieved by merging the digital world with physical experiences, through technological and sensory interventions which create a heightened awareness of the fragility and unity of our planet and universe.
