Kaori Tatebayashi

Kaori Tatebayashi is a trained potter, who studied ceramics both in Japan and the U.K. She makes hand-modelled ceramic sculpture. Using clay, she meticulously details her observations of plants and objects, which are subsequently fired to stoneware temperature.

All her pieces are hand-built using various sculpting and pottery techniques that she has learnt over her years of working in clay. She is currently concentrating on botanical wall pieces, which require careful planning and understanding of the material.

At Future Heritage

For Future Heritage Tatebayashi made a large ceramic wall installation based on the plants and wild life that she saw when on an observational visit to Sion Park, (where Decorex was to be held). She also created her largest ceramic still life to date, turning a great master painting into a 3D clay banquet scene.

“Future Heritage also opened the door to collaborations with interior designers and architects. I gained significant press coverage, including a profile in House & Garden.  I also received great exposure to the world outside the applied arts, where I had not previously been known. It was eye-opening.” Kaori Tatebayashi

Current work

Kaori Tatebayashi was commissioned by a flower grower in Wiltshire to create a wall installation inspired by the owner’s heritage tulip collection. She had been planning work to undertake during a residency at Dan Pearson’s house and garden in Bath during this Spring/ Summer. It is currently postponed, but she is working on a one-woman show with her new gallery, later in the autumn.
