ABOUT
Fung + Bedford is a multidisciplinary studio creating large-scale, immersive installations inspired by abstract origami geometry. Their process-driven practice evolved from exploration of origami's healing properties, repetitive folds and geometric patterns fostered emotional connection and deeper creativity (which Angela found through grief). Ashley's architectural expertise helped the studio develop its signature "Architectural Origami.
"Their initial focus on handmade processes, exploring organic forms, hand-scored lines, and gold/spray paint applications, is seen in Dreaming of Dad (Saatchi Gallery).
The introduction of machine scoring, a cutter plotter, and Rhino software enabled larger, more complex folds, leading to collaborations with architectural firms, notably the McKinsey Project.
A collaboration with Fedrigoni expanded the studio's material and colour palette, exemplified by The Gathering Series (Somerset House), which combines fluid paper manipulation with gold accents, reflecting post-COVID togetherness.
18, inspired by Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians and a Concord Art Prize finalist, explored folded paper as a building block for intricate, parametric designs. This exploration of geometric forms evolved into more organic, curved shapes, as seen in the calming, rhythmically hung paper sculptures of Unfold the Moment.
A collaboration with a blacksmith led to extruded aluminium arcs, a structural innovation used in Dance of the Capulets (Saudi Arabia) and the London office HQ lobby installation, Confluence.
Over the past decade, they have combined geometry, repetition, and origami-inspired folds with industrial materials like Tyvek, manipulated metal, and tensioned wires. This fusion of art and industry has resulted in ethereal, meditative works offering viewers a unique and immersive experience.
