The Lamps Temple & Ivy unveil a beautiful interior lighting collection, combining traditional sculpture with modern materials and the rich textures and flamboyance of the natural world. Their very first collection is a range of bird leg lamp bases that have been, almost, brought to life by the sculptor as each set of legs is so detailed and life-like. The collection features Avocets, Flamingos, African Jacana, African Rail, Runner Ducks, Ostrich and Purple Gallinule.
Temple & Ivy founders and business partners, Nicky Boulton and Susan Neville, spent several months in Kenya and Zimbabwe photographing and tracking birds to launch their first lighting range. Working with sculptor Neil R Mason, a winner of several wildlife sculpture awards, they ensure that the legs are as life-like as possible. Using Neil's talent for capturing the movement of a bird and the foundry's expertise interpreting it, the legs have the appearance of a bird freely walking, not grounded by a base. Birds’ feet are, after all, perfectly balanced for their environment. Temple & Ivy lamps are perfectly suited for theirs – a variety of interior spaces, a dramatic finishing touch.
The Shades No lamp is complete without a fabulous shade and attention to detail has ensured a comprehensive and stunning range to complement the legs and finishes. Many of the shades are exquisitely feathered, others are a Patina Copper and some feature Maasai beads. Nicky and Susan are working with a Maasai co-operative in Africa who create all the beaded designs exclusively for them. Why Bird Feet? Nicky & Susan were not only inspired by the birds they discovered on their African travels but also by historical design. They were drawn in particular to the Georgians, who used feet on all kinds of household furniture and to the Surrealists, who explored the use of legs and feet on tables and chairs. Temple & Ivy cleverly bring both classic and contemporary styles together and lighting is just the start. Editors’ Notes: Temple & Ivy’s individually handcrafted lamps have been sculpted and forged in Somerset using traditional cold cast bronze resin and carbon fibre, a method which gives the legs great strength.
Specialist techniques are used to achieve the range of finishes and include Bronze, Copper Verdigris, Pewter and Old Gold. Shades can be made in customer’s own fabrics. www.templeandivy.com - Made in England Press Contact: Alison Millar, leaf pr T: 01985 845047/07876 616414 E: [email protected]
