Designers’ Advisor Polly Williams of Camberyard, an award-winning interior design business development consultancy, returns to Decorex for the third year in a row. She has invited four members of her thriving Camberyard Collective – Sarah Bullen-Webb, Henrietta Holroyd, Laura Keith and Lizzie Tovey to share their experiences and tips for Decorex ahead of their panel discussion this October.

Why should I come to Decorex?

Decorex is the UK’s largest and most reputable trade show for high-end residential interior design. It is the culmination of hundreds of creatives coming together: suppliers showing beautiful new collections, designers buzzing with new ideas and specialists demonstrating their craft. As a designer, it’s a fantastic place to meet existing suppliers and view their new collections, discover new suppliers and brands, and be inspired by cutting-edge design. From a brand perspective, it’s great for increasing brand awareness and making new connections with other exhibitors and clients. For all attendees, the show offers great insight into where the trends are heading and, of course, it’s an opportunity to attend some wonderful talks from inspiring industry pros. And you never know what you might encounter. Lizzie recalls a memorable year when de Gournay had a stand showcasing their artists hand-painting onto silk wallpaper – their skill was astounding!

With so many fantastic talks and exhibits, where do I start?

For the talks, it’s unlikely you’ll have time to go to all those you would like to, so it can be helpful to narrow them down to those designers that inspire you, or those talks on subjects you would like to learn more about, perhaps a particular area you are focusing on improving. You might even end up speaking at a talk you first attended – Lizzie first met Polly at her Decorex panel talk in 2018!

As a designer or brand, what, if anything, should I bring to Decorex?

Your face! Designers often spend a long time speaking on the phone and emailing people they have never met. Decorex is fantastic for putting names to faces. When you meet people in person it can make a real difference to your working relationship. Aside from making face-to-face connections, it’s important to bring your enthusiasm for new products as well as to give feedback on areas you would like your suppliers to expand on, making suggestions for future products and discussing the pros and cons of their existing ranges. From a brand perspective, it’s your opportunity to shine and get your name out there. Try to bring something unique and original – and be open to sharing your methods, processes and ethos.

Top tips for a newcomer to Decorex?

Wear comfy shoes and a smile! It can be overwhelming, so allow a whole day and take your time, get chatting to suppliers, brands and designers that catch your eye. Make contacts and follow them up afterwards. With so much to look at, to ensure you don’t come home with a blurry confusion of designs, leaflets and faces, have a system in place to keep track of which product relates to which supplier. Taking photos of the items you like as well as a picture of the stand can help you keep everything straight. And make sure you allow time to visit the smaller, up-and-coming companies in the Foundations area. It’s slightly off the beaten track, but this is where you’ll find inspiring new designers who will bring something different to the bigger brands who are there year in year out!
