We speak with the esteemed furniture maker to find out more about his activities at Decorex 2013, as well as taking a look at what the future holds for Tom Faulkner.

How did you first get into the interior design industry?

I started off by painting tables, in a very specific way, with distinctive and colourful patterns. I realised the best people to try to sell my tables to would be interior designers. It was not long before I discovered the beauty of working with metal.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration, and why?

Inspiration is everywhere, all around. It all goes in and some of it comes out....I find people who combine business and creativity very inspirational, like Paul Smith.

If you could describe your work in 3 words, what would they be?

Distinctive, Simple, Elegant

What is the biggest challenge in your working life?

Finding the time to design while running a business

If you could design for any person, who would it be?

There's no one person I would like to design for - my favourite thing is to design for friends really.

Could you tell us a little about your activities at Decorex 2013?

We launched new furniture including the Vienna table, chair, and lights. We showed our signature piece - the Capricorn dining table - in copper, for the first time. We also launched new finishes for our furniture.

Are there any new releases on the horizon?

Yes, we have some exciting new chairs about to launch, and new lights.

What does the future look like for you?

Bright, I hope! We will continue to broaden our offer, adding not just new tables and chairs, but also garden furniture, lighting, & accessories etc.

What is highlight of your career so far?

Opening our showroom in Chelsea was a key moment, as was moving in to our new workshops earlier this year. And of course winning the House and Garden Award for "Most Stylish Product" at Decorex 2012!

What would your advice be for aspiring designers?

I'm probably not the best person to give advice, because my own route to where I am now has been quite unusual. I had no training, or expectations.

If you're going to start out on your own then your marketing will be as important as your designing, and if you are going to design for others then be open minded and learn as much as you can, and get as close to the production as you can.
