Founded in 1980, Nicholas Haslam comprises both retail and interior design and has a spectacular array of international awards to its name, including a place on Architectural Digest’s Top 100 Designers in the World. Since Paolo Moschino took to the helm in 1995, the company has evolved to include three showrooms, a design studio and a trade office marketing its collections of furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories.
Whether it’s part of the company’s eclectic retail offering or for an interior design project, designers Moschino and Philip Vergeylen blend traditional opulence with unexpected details in each and every creation.
We caught up with internationally acclaimed designer Moschino to talk weird and wonderful interior projects, career journeys and the life-changing things he learned along the way…
A trip to London when I was 23 years old ended up changing my life forever, and many years later London has become my home. I studied in Florence and surrounded by amazing creativity and art and a trained eye to spot beauty everywhere, but my partner Philip Vergeylen remains my biggest source of inspiration and support. The most important thing I learned along the way was the need to work hard to make dreams possible.
For those wanting to break into the industry, my advice would be to grab every opportunity in front of you and don’t let them pass. And when it comes to creative genius and natural-born talent, I believe if you want to, you can learn anything!
The most unexpected project I’ve ever worked on was to design an air conditioned hen house with a self-cleaning floor. And the most challenging? To complete a large family home in London in the space of three months, for a family moving in with just one suitcase.
An average day for me begins with a 7:30am walk in the park with my beloved dog. I get to the office at 9:30 and don’t stop working until 7:30pm, but always try to find the time to visit my three stores during the day to discuss future plans with every colleague. The worst part of my job is the temptation to become a workaholic, while the best has to be meeting amazing people all of the time and being constantly surrounded by beauty.
