Ab Rogers and Vanessa Brady present MDS vision

Designer Ab Rogers and Society of British Interior Design (SBID) founder and president Vanessa Brady shared their vision for the upcoming May Design Series at a special event at the Sub-Zero and Wolf London showroom last week. The event, hosted by May Design Series organisers UBM, was a chance for key interiors companies and industry members to discover more about London’s most comprehensive design trade show from event creative director Rogers and official event partner SBID.  

Brady, who founded SBID five years ago to provide a voice for British designers, manufacturers and specifiers, spoke about the need for a new design trade event for a dramatically changing industry in a world-leading market.

'The world looks to Britain as the leaders of design,' she said, adding that to date 'London didn’t have one trade exhibition that encompassed all the different sectors of industry.' Enter the May Design Series which, by bringing KBB London, INTERIORS LDN, the Arc Show and DX under one roof, will cater to all facets of the business.    

 'UBM is really pushing the boundary at the moment to reinvent the way products are presented at trade shows,' Brady said. 'The way the May Design Series has been set up, it’s divided into sectors that are of interest to the way designers work... by dividing and diversifying it will address a targeted audience.'

Designer and May Design Series Creative Director Ab Rogers – whose previous projects include work for the Tate Modern, Selfridges, Conde Nast and Comme des Garcons – shared the inspiration behind his exhibition design for the four shows making up the May Design Series.

'We’re finding a way to get people inspired within the environment to create a trade show which has warmth and humour,' Rogers explained. The four ‘districts’ of the event will be presented as a cityscape, with distinct spaces to explore and experience. In Rogers’ unmistakeable style, visitors will be encouraged to interact and play with the environment. 'We need landmarks; we need to challenge the way people are behaving,' Rogers said. 'We’re excited and inspired to create a new type of trade show which feels quite different to what is out there now.'

Brady is confident the May Design Series will attract the best minds in the business from around the world. 'It will bring the cream of the cream from our design industry into one hub and do it in a way that is very different, and will therefore be a mecca destination for all different countries as well. I see it as being the new way forward.'
