Tim Gosling & Friends Masterclasses

As part of the Sight area of Design Sense, Tim Gosling & friends will teach a series of masterclasses on all aspects of visual design. From drawing and watercolours to gilding and works with leather and glass, take a look at the schedule and book your place by emailing sam.fisher@ubm.com with your preferred class, day and time. Spaces are limited and will be on a first come, first served basis.

SCHEDULE - DAY ONE - SUNDAY 17th SEPTEMBER

11:00 – 11:30am: Tim Gosling - A Masterclass in drawing, water colour and the iPad Pro
How to draw and watercolour  - a 40 minute in depth explanation on how to create room set perspectives, designing and placing furniture using pencils, the new iPad Pro and traditional watercolours.

12:30 – 1:10pm: Gavin Rookledge - It’s a wrap: Cladding unusual objects in leather
Gavin Rookledge from Rook’s Books of London will be talking about his work as a craftsman and leather worker in the interior design industry. He will be focussing on specific techniques he uses as well as the use of leather in interiors.

2:00 – 2:40pm: Carver’s & Gilders - Good enough to gild
What can be gilded and how it’s done. A short talk about the historical context for oil and water gilded finishes with the opportunity to handle pieces from different periods, look at pictures and take part during demonstrations.

3:30 – 4:10pm Tim Gosling & Edward Bulmer - Colour Confidence
Tim and Edward explore the basics of colour and why a few 'rules' underpin a world of colour, so that you can use as little or as much as you like and always create beautiful and balanced interiors. Learn about the history of colour, preparing a palette of pigments and understand tonality and look at complimentary contrast.

How to draw and watercolour  - a 40 minute in depth explanation on how to create room set perspectives, designing and placing furniture using pencils, the new iPad Pro and traditional watercolours.

2:00 – 2:40pm: Peter Binnington - Decoration of glass with engraved gold leaf and paint
Peter will prepare a glass panel about 50cm high and 20 wide, decorated with a Chinoiserie design plus smaller panels, each representing a stage in the creation of the large panel. He will demonstrate some of the processes used to create the finished panel. Such as:

  • Laying gold leaf on glass
  • Buffing and engraving
  • Backing with colour
  • Distressing a silver-leaf background
