Tanya Gomez is a celebrated ceramist renowned for her porcelain vessels in her signature lustrous, intense colours. She has an MA in Ceramics from the Royal College, but is also a master of colour.
Tanya Gomez’s process is practice led. Developed from traditional methods and disciplines, she has honed her skills over the last 15 years, using dynamic throwing, cutting and assembling techniques, to create large cylindrical shapes. Impactful both individually and as a group, her vessels create expressive, vivid landscapes and fluid, architectural forms.
Her work derives from her observations of natural phenomena, dramatic landscapes and the shifting qualities of the sea, the latter drawn from her experience of coastal living, working on private yachts and absorbing the abstract qualities of colour and shape, while at sea. It informs her art forms and evocative glazes. “My vessels and installations can look like they are flowing” says Gomez. “Clay is contradictory like that. You’re using this beautiful soft material but to manipulate it my movements are directive, strong and controlled”.
As a master of her craft, Tanya Gomez’s contemporary and original work is recognised by the Arts Council and Craft Council of England. She has gained much acclaim exhibiting internationally and continues to evolve her style, experimenting and pushing her practice and the boundaries of her craft.
Tanya Gomez creates both domestic and large scale works for sale and to commission.
In 2015 for Future Heritage, Tanya Gomez produced some of her largest thrown porcelain vessels to date. Pushing the scale of her signature vessels of undulating tops, she created a beautiful soft form, ‘Bella,’ in cadmium. The technical skill and challenge of throwing porcelain in a large quantity creates a multitude of risks and faults. Undaunted, Tanya Gomez presented tall vessels of approximately 45 centimetre high and statement pieces approximately 45 centirmetre wide alongside a collection of smaller works.
“I was very impressed by the organization and presentation of the stand. The curator and Decorex really treated the exhibitors very well and made us feel unique.” - Tanya Gomez
Over the last five years Tanya Gomez has built her success by exhibiting around the UK and overseas. In 2019, she had her first solo exhibition at MARCH, San Francisco, USA. She created a range of monochrome vessels that depicted the terrain we walk on.
In 2017 supported by an Arts Council Grant, she exhibited a 5 metre x 3 metre installation comprised of 43 vessels with a backdrop, at COLLECT Open.
She has exhibited at numerous shows including The London Art Fair, Ceramic Art London and VASE in Dublin, Her collaboration work with Lignereux, ‘Mighty Fountain,’ a porcelain celadon tower, surrounded with gold gilding was exhibited at Masterpiece, London, in 2018. Sadly several shows this year have been cancelled due to Coronavirus, however others such as Glyndebourne and a show at Blackwell House have been postponed.
