We've teamed up with The Monkey Puzzle Tree - the multi award winning English interiors brand that focuses on highly eccentric wallpapers and fabric designs - to create an insightful how-to guide on harnessing patterens in your interior schemes.

It can be difficult to know how to use a highly decorative pattern within a room. Often, people can get lost in all the different designs that are on the market and lose sight of what they are trying to achieve. Above all, the most important tactic is to create a balance. You can certainly use more that one pattern within a space, but it's advisable to do so carefully and thoutghtfully.

Follow our 5 handy pieces of advice to always apply bold patterns perfectly when you are designing:

  1. Go With Your Gut
  2. Experiment In a Small Space
  3. Use A Simple Clour Palette
  4. Sometime More Is More
  5. If In Doubt, Test It With a Roman Blind

Go With Your Gut

Whatever the size or period of your home, introducing pattern adds a layer of character and personality to your home that you can’t always achieve with plain colour alone.

Choose a design because you really love it, not just because it’s on trend. Having an emotional connection to a print, maybe because it reminds you of your childhood or a happy time will ensure that you don’t tire of it within a few months.

Experiment In A Small Space

The downstairs bathroom is a great place to start your experimentation with pattern as you can create a powerful impact with minimal amount of wallpaper. Also, as this isn;t a frequently used room you can be really adventurous.

In this smaller space, we suggest papering in something like The Monkey Puzzle Tree's cork ‘Hit the North’ wallpaper. As well as creating drama and fun in the smallest room in the house, the design which depicts scenes from the industrial North of England - a quriky touch.

Use a Simple Colour Palette

Using a print with a limited colour palette of one or two colours can bring character into your room without being too overbearing and can also be easier to pair with other elements in your house.

This chair is upholstered in a textured natural fabric with a deceptively simple print which tells a story of the natural world. It can be used as cushions, upholstery or curtains depending on how brave you’re feeling!

For a more pared back look, you can use a neutral colour palette and be more adventurous with the design even if pattern is usually out of your comfort zone. This fabric tones with the rustic walls and natural colours in the room and is created from original miniature pencil drawings.

Sometimes More Is More

It can be scary taking the plunge and embarking on a new journey of design, especially if you aren't used to applying such vivid patterns. Sometimes it's best to make a big decision and see where it takes you. Most of the time a strong design choice is better than a half hearted one.
