Anna Lorenz

Anna Lorenz works across the disciplines of silversmithing, sculpture and jewellery with a minimalist aesthetic. Originally from the South of Germany, Lorenz trained as an apprentice with a Master Goldsmith, gained a BA (Hons) first class degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing from the School of Jewellery and completed a Master of Fine Art degree at the School of Art, Birmingham City University in 2013.

Lorenz works across disciplines in a practice-based way from a studio in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Her work is diverse and multi-layered, utilising gold and metalworking techniques to investigate formal concerns of geometric structures, space and layering. Simplicity of form and attention to subtle details characterise all of Lorenz’s work. Inspired by art and architecture she enjoys the hands on, physical process of making and problem solving. Although she predominately works in metal, she has introduced paper, slate and glass into some projects to add contrast and variety.

Lorenz is now a scholar of the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust. She exhibits internationally and her work is represented in Birmingham’s St. Philips Cathedral, The New College in Oxford, the Jewellery Quarter Museum, the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, Germany, the Goldsmiths Contemporary Silver Collection in London and in private collections.

At Future Heritage

Future Heritage was a new platform for Lorenz’s practice, she was delighted to be chosen by Corinne Julius to exhibit as part of a selected group of highly creative and individual makers in a range of disciplines. Lorenz created a series of new pieces for Future Heritage in 2019 including a freestanding three-panelled room divider. Each panel consists of two meticulously hand cut layers of coloured aluminium grids, held in a simple frame. Held in subtle light and dark grey tones, the work is entirely handmade, a one off, sculptural screen for a special space.

Lorenz also displayed a set of double walled silver vessels, which consisted of a solid outer form and a perforated inner vessel. The reflective quality of highly polished silver is set against the brushed inner form to create depth and a sense of illusion. Alongside that, she presented an installation of floating wire sculptures; wire balls in three different sizes, which can be used as containers. Finally, Lorenz created a paper wall triptych for Future Heritage, made of layered and framed, cut paper. The grid is used in the work and starts in an orderly manner and finally gives way to a dynamic movement in the final part of the work.

“My work fits well into an interior context and I was inspired to explore scale and function in my sculptural work. The stand [at Future Heritage] was extremely well curated and there was enough space for each of the exhibitors to show the breadth and quality of our practice.” - Anna Lorenz

Current work

Anna Lorenz has been commissioned by New College, Oxford to create a silver finger bowl for their treasured Silver collection, as part of the 2019 Silver Audit. The work she made for Future Heritage was subsequently shown at BPN Architects in Birmingham in November and December 2019. The work fitted perfectly into the Architect’s space and led to a collaboration with a landscape architect on a new development project in Birmingham.
