Ilona Broeseliske

Ilona Broeseliske is a Dutch born ceramicist, who completed her MA in ceramics at the Royal College of Art in 2017.

Scale plays an important role in the work of Ilona Broeseliske, her sculptures being no larger than the human head. She calls her practice ‘P.P.P.’ (Petrified Porcelain Poetry) and compares the work with 3D line drawings, escaped out of white A4 copy paper and ’becoming stone.’  Through tactility, a highly-finished surface and almost engineer-like precision, she summons the observer to come closer, inviting an intimate and sensuous relationship between the object and the viewer.

Broeseliske loves to play and has created her own toys and sculptures out of porcelain. Incisions, drawers and cavities are carved into the work to connect different parts together. Compositions of sculptures can be taken apart to form new compositions. They are named with a binary code. The works are immensly tactile, reminiscent of Japanese Nesuke, they entice the viewer into handling them.

At Future Heritage

For Future Heritage  she created a series of  ‘Lightning Boxes.’ All the boxes were made of different pieces of porcelain and inlaid with solid Fine silver or 22k Gold. They were heavy and absorbed bodies. Underneath the top platform of the exhibition furniture was a hidden drawer. Inside the drawer sculptures and toys out of porcelain were exhibited. The drawer would be opened occasionally to reveal the hidden contents.

“I’m grateful to have been part of Future Heritage so shortly after my graduation. It helped me gain more clarity about my practice and how I wished to develop. I met some very nice fellow artists, from whom I learned a lot and with whom I had a very enjoyable time.”  Ilona Broeseliske

Current work

Ilona Broeseliske was selected to take part in the Korean International Ceramic Biennale 2019 (2020) (former GICB). She was also selected for This Art Fair 2020, which has now been postopned to 2021 as a result of Coronavirus. She has been working on a series of games to be played alone.
