The Colour of Hair - Martijn Rigters

Martijn Rigters graduated from the Design Products Department of the Royal College of Art in 2016. In 2018, he formed a new design practice with Namuun Zimmermann, operating in both Vienna and London, which focuses on experimental object design. By combining conceptual thinking with material research and process experiment, the studio seeks to create outcomes that are original in their aesthetics and functionality.

Studio Sain exhibited with Rosanna Orlandi during the Milan Salone del Mobile in 2019, presenting their ‘Fade’ and’ Cutting Edge’ furniture, as well as at the Aram Gallery, Maison et Object, Mint Gallery and the Swiss Design Biennale, amongst others. The studio has run events, workshops and interventions for various institutions and educational organisations, including the V&A.

At Future Heritage

Collaborating with Fabio Hendry, Martijn Rigters created a custom-made floor, based on their project, ‘The Colour of Hair.’ Rigters and Hendry developed a technique to carbonise natural fibres, in this case waste hair, onto aluminium. For Future Heritage they created a floor with over 300 unique tiles and a new series of aluminium stools and bowls.

“Thanks to our presentation at Future Heritage, we were able to create a new large-scale installation of ‘The Colour of Hair’ with a UK-based manufacturer, which was subsequently showcased during Milan design week and at the Zurich Biennale.”  Martijn Rigters

Current work

Studio Sain developed their ‘Cutting Edge,’ furniture range, based on the process of hot-wire cutting. From the idea of seeing movement as liquid form, a large scale cutting machine was built to capture the movements of the maker and directly translate them into a permanent shape. Starting out with a solid block of foam, a series of wires carved all sides of the sofa. They can be placed in endless compositions and act as a bespoke blueprint for every new piece. The sofas are coated with a durable rubber coating, making them suitable for permanent outdoor use.

The studio has been working on a number of projects - using woodturning, an undervalued traditional skill. Their ‘Bulbous Collection,’ is a hand-turned series of movable lights, mirrors and shelves. The studio has also completed a number of private commissions. Simultaneously they have started a new funded research project in ceramics, exploring slip-casting and are now producing a series of mirrors, trays and vessels.
