50 years of Inchbald School of Design

Jacqueline
Jacqueline Duncan
After 50 years at the helm of the world famous Inchbald School of Design, there is little Jacqueline Duncan doesn’t know about the subject.  A doyenne of the design industry, Jacqueline established the Inchbald School in 1960 when it was Europe’s first design school.  A half century on and the Inchbald remains one of the most prestigious educational establishments in the world with alumni including Zaha Hadid, Henrietta Spencer Churchill, Stephen Ryan, Diana Yakeley, Christophe Gollut, Luciano Guibellei, Jonathan Craggs and Zeynep Fadillioglu.

Decorex is celebrating the Inchbald’s contribution to the design world with a special lecture by Jacqueline Duncan looking at how design and design education has developed over the last five decades.  Jacqueline was the inaugural
recipient of the BIDA’s Lifetime Achievement award in 2006, acknowledging the phenomenal influence she has had on the industry, and this will be a rare opportunity to hear from one of the design world’s most influential and revered figures.  In recent years Jacqueline has personally pioneered the school’s online courses and students from the UAE, Far East, North America and Europe are currently engaged in distance learning, all benefiting from the world class Inchbald tuition that has long been the breeding ground for some of the leading names in design.

The European Hotel Design Awards 2009 shortlist has been announced! The high level judging panel including Robert Cook of Malmaison, Simon Ford of Intercontinental Hotel Group, Tim Mutton of Blacksheep, Jeremy Blake of Purcell Miller Tritton and editor of Sleeper magazine, Matt Turner, have perused the countless number of entries received and after much consideration have revealed the shortlist of nominations.

The shortlist spans the breadth of Europe, featuring hotels

The Boundary, which opened in January 2009 by Terence and Vicki Conran, features in two categories – Conversion of an existing Building to Hotel Use and the Bedroom & Bathroom Interior Design (sponsored by Grohe) category. The Boundary is housed in a Victorian industrial building in Shoreditch and features a 17-bedroom hotel, a roof garden with bar and grill, a restaurant as well as a café and food store. The existing mansard has been demolished and two new floors constructed, housing duplex suites with double height living space and bed-deck above, clad in pre-patinated green copper and timber brise soleil.

The winners will be announced at the prestigious award ceremony, hosted by Mariella Frostrup, on Monday 2nd November at the Hilton Park Lane. The evening of networking and socialising will recognise the projects that have won their way through a tough field of entries to be the best in their class.
