Decorex International, the interior design show for professionals, will open its doors once again this September. The trend-setting event will showcase new and exciting products from a wide variety of exhibitors. Now in its 32nd year, the show has proven to be one of the most important events in the international design calendar. An exciting number of international companies are appearing on this year’s exhibitor list, promising an experience of different cultural influences in design and craftsmanship.

Young and upcoming Portuguese companies Boca de Lobo and Munna are joining market leaders such as Spanish porcelain manufacturers Lladro and Sandberg, manufacturer of fine textiles and wallpapers and purveyors to the King of Sweden.

Other exhibitors from around the globe include Emery et Cie from Belgium, Alhambra from Spain, Cinabre from France and Jose Leite de Castro from Portugal.

The Minister of State has granted the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) the prestigious and rare accolade of being granted the right to incorporate ‘Institute’ into its name.  On 1st June 2009 members from across the UK met in the Association’s London headquarters and voted unanimously to become the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).     Companies House grants the use of the word Institute only to "professional bodies of the highest standing" which have demonstrated pre-eminence in their field. According to BIID President Iris Dunbar “The British Institute of Interior Design exists to represent the Interior Design profession as a voice of the industry to client, government and educational bodies.”

Already setting precedents with its joint publication the RIBA/BIDA Form of Appointment, ID/05 has become the standard contract for interior designers as recognised by courts and lawyers throughout the United Kingdom.  The Institute is also a recent member of the Construction Industry Council (CIC), the umbrella body for professional institutes working in the built environment, such as RIBA, RICS, and ICE, granting it an equal voice at the highest levels of influence and with direct access to government consultations.  These developments further the BIID’s mission and strengthen the validation of its members to the general public.

The European Hotel Design Awards returns on Monday 2nd November 2009, celebrating hotel design across Europe. This year the black tie awards ceremony, honouring the work of architects, designers and developers, will return to central London for its twelfth year at the prestigious Hilton Park Lane hotel.  Mariella Frostrup will play host for this glamorous evening. Well known for her unique voice,she has firmly established herself at the

top end of opinion forming journalists and TV presenters in the UK. Mariella writes regularly for The Observer, Psychologies and Harpers Bazaar amongst other publications. Presenter of The Book Show for Sky Arts, she hosted a live ten part series, Hay On Sky for the third year running in May, showcasing the highlights of Britains biggest literary festival. She also presents Open Book and fronted the Memory Season for Radio Four. Mariella has sat on the judging panels of various prestigious awards including the Booker Prize, the Turner Prize and the RIBA Stirling Prize Awards.

The Award categories include the best architecture of a hotel, both conversion and newbuild.  Interior design categories for various spaces including guestrooms, bar, restaurant and lobby areas. Other awards celebrate innovation, sustainability and the two final awards recognise outstanding contribution to the industry and the European Hotel Design of the Year.
