The Seminar line-up

 Lecture theatre
The celebrated seminar programme at Decorex is nearly complete, with a great variety of presenters and topics chosen from around the industry. The last few spaces are just being confirmed, but here are a few highlights to look out for on this year’s programme.
The seminar programme at Decorex is always a must-attend, with a long list of acclaimed designers and industry professionals putting their name to it. The seminar theatre was packed last year  with the audience spilling out of the sides at some of the more popular talks. This year will be no exception….the programme covers all areas with presentations from leading designers to trend forecasters and interior design schools to topics of technology and sustainability.~

 Martin
Martin Brudnizki, whose trademark ‘minimalism deluxe’ design lends itself perfectly to such high-voltage glamour locations such as Le Caprice at the Pierre Hotel in New York; Cecconi’s in West Hollywood and the Soho Beach House in Miami, will speak on ‘Successful Interiors: Where design and commerce meet.’

Another leading designer, one of Architectural Digest’s Top 100 designers, Roger Thomas will bring his wide experience of creating luxury hotel resorts to speak about the ability to ensure that even large hotels feel boutique.

Trend forecasts will come in two different guises. Victoria Redshaw from Scarlet Opus will give her insight into the design trends for 2011 and into 2010. Global Color – Mix Publications will give a more focused colour forecast for next year and again, into 2012.
 Roger

 DL
The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), Inchbald School of Design and the KLC School of Design will all give educated sessions, motivational speaker Lloyd Princeton will speak about finding international trade and an inspirational panel discussion will be hosted by Kate Burnett, editor of idFX who will discover how far David Linley, Marc Bonnet from Collection Pierre and Lulu Lytle from Soane will go to please their clients!

With many more - Jean Louis Deniot, Angus Gibson, Tim Gosling and Johnny Grey to name a few - this year’s seminar programme is one to note.

Focus on Flooring

In another of our product focuses, we look at a selection of flooring exhibitors showcasing at this year’s Decorex and find a variety of rugs, carpets and hard floor options for you…

 Veedon Fleece
Veedon Fleece, a long-term exhibitor of Decorex, has created four new carpet designs for this year inspired by great works from the past three hundred years, each with a regard for the 21st Century interior.

‘Ruffled Feathers’ has succinctly portrayed feathers by twisting these delicate forms to create a movement so that the eye dances around the carpet and unites any room in colour and form.
Other highlights include the Sun King, a carpet inspired by an 18th Century cabinet, the Josephine Damask and Old English Soho, a homage to the exquisite colour of the elegant but opulent Soho tapestries woven in London.

Each carpet is individually commissioned using muga, pashmina, silk, veedon or best hand spun Tibetan wool to create both classical and contemporary designs.

Deborah Rolt Rugs have been established  for over 25 years and think that Decorex ‘is the best place to showcase new designs to the most influential interior decorators currently working not only in the UK but also the many foreign decorators who visit.’

 Deborah Rolt
New ranges of rugs are currently in production, ready to be launched at Decorex in September, pictured is one of the most popular designs of the moment.
Anne Treadwell, Manager of Deborah Rolt Rugs, explains, “As a small company I do not have a shop or "space" at Chelsea Harbour so this is the place where I can meet new designers re- establish contact with old clients and in many cases discuss directly with the decorator and their client the projects that they are working on.”

“As my company has been in existence for over 25 years it is important to keep in touch with the new decorating trends and to meet the new young decorators who perhaps have not come into contact with me before - and it gives them a chance to "see and feel and touch" the rug so that they are then able to ‘sell it to their client.’”

 Rug Company

Another faithful Decorex supporter is The Rug Company who will exhibit new additions to its Designer and Contemporary Collections this year. Examples from new collaborations with Alexander McQueen, Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, Sue Timney and US architect David Rockwell will be on display as well as recent designs by Paul Smith, Allegra Hicks and Vivenne Westwood.
Their stand will encourage visitors to explore the possibilities of custom rug commissions; any rug can be recoloured, resized, or commissioned from scratch using a variety of colours, yarns and weaving techniques.

To see these and even more floorcovering companies including Ateliers Pinton, Devon Stone, Jacaranda Carpets, Loomah, Riviere, The Unnatural Flooring Company and Walking on Wood, register for a ticket to Decorex

Can design make a difference?

 Solar Shuttle
Taking place at the Design Museum until the 5th September is Sustainable Futures, an exhibition that celebrates a wide range of design and architectural projects that explore the most important issues associated with sustainability and demonstrate how design can influence the way we interact with our immediate environment.

Presented around five key themes - Cities, Creative Citizen, Energy & Economics, Food (for thought) and MaterialitySustainable Futures highlights the products, concepts and projects that address sustainability in their design including a refrigerator that doubles as an aquarium!

Cork One of the products in the Materiality section focuses on the use of cork, one of the most sustainable materials around. Cork is sustainably harvested from cork oak trees without killing or harvesting the entire tree and once the outer layer of bark is stripped off the tree, it will grow back making it very renewable.
French designer, Martin Szekely has used the versatility of cork to produce a series of limited-edition furniture including drawers and chairs.

Other projects included in the exhibition are Masdar City, Abu Dhabi; the Solar Shuttle, a vessel with solar panels that gave it the energy needed to power the boat at six knots; and the ANDREA air living purifier that absorbs undesirable effects of contaminated air and absorbs its toxic compounds through leaves and roots of plants such as gerberas and philodendrons.
