SKILLED AND SLICK: New calligraphy works by Chosho Yabe

Biden introduces new work by the acclaimed artist Chosho Yabe. We always explore various styles of her expression; we are excited to introduce these sveltely styled pieces. It is unusually proportioned, yet beautifully composed.

We chose this piece because it shows an innovative style of the traditional medium. And, Biden feels very special to introduce this work “INORI” (Prayer); we believe that the theme of the work cannot be more appropriate for this particular moment. Japan needs prayer; it will be an incredibly long journey for Japan to recover from the devastating earthquake and tsunami. Biden actively supports the “BUY J CRAFT” campaign lead by Noriko Sawayama BIID to help Japan rebuild.

Yabe Chosho started her career in calligraphy at the age of six. Her fresh, liberal approach to this ancient art shows Chinese characters as painted works of art. She diligently refers to the dictionary of SHO-DO (calligraphy) and studies the interpretations of great Chinese calligraphers. Feeding on these sources she then allows her imagination to run free and explore the expression of her chosen subjects. Whether it be a single character or an extract of modern poetry, Yabe’s sensitivity to the brush is difficult to ignore.

Yabe has created Chinese characters inspired by the moon’s waxing and waning. She has expressed her interpretation in a series of nine works and various tiled displays are possible.
